Fat: While we may hate it on our hips it works great as a natural filler for Faces, Booties and Imperfections in the Body! Ask Dr. Dean Kane, Plastic Surgeon in Maryland How Fat Works.

Dr. Dean Kane, Plastic Surgeon of Maryland has been using fat in the most unique ways. Instead of discarding the fat after liposuction, Dr. Kane takes the patient’s fat and injects it into other areas of the body and face. Many patients love how the fat fills in their faces to give a beautiful upper cheek lift, fill in the nasal folds and plumps the lips. For the patient always wanting a bigger booty, the fat can be transferred to create a Brazilian butt lift. What is wonderful about fat is that it can be used anywhere the patient wants it. Some patients want their fat in the lower part of their buttocks, others want on their upper part and others want more on their hips.

Patients who have had prior surgeries or accidents in the past, like a hip replacement have a thin scar over their hip and need more padding to cushion the bone. The fat can be transferred along the hip to better protect the hip replacement. Any imperfections in the body that has a hollow indent can be filled with your own fat.

The big question is will it last? That will vary from patient to patient and depending where the fat is placed. Dr. Kane will tell patients that there is no guarantee as to how much will stay that is transferred and how long it will stay. But many of our patients will say that whatever portion does live it seems to stay for years and years. It is important to transfer the fat immediately after the fat has been liposuctioned (within the same operation) as the cells are still intact and require immediate blood supply from another part of the body for the fat cells to live.  Fat that has been frozen will not  last the same length of time. Fat is a larger molecular structure than the fillers like Restylane or Juvederm so it gives a fuller fill with greater plumpness. Be prepared: Fat transferred in the face will possibly cause greater bruising and swelling and will take a longer time for recovery, especially in the lips.

And no you can’t use another person’s fat. The patients who are lucky to be thin and don’t have enough fat to transfer are still lucky to have the other fillers like Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm Ultra and Radiesse to use in their faces that work just as well as fat.

For patients of Dr. Kane who are considering liposuction of their neck, arms, abdomen, thighs and back, Dr. Kane offers to use their fat for lip-transfer into other aspects of their body. Waste not want not!!  Summer months are may be hot, but it is a great time to rid yourself of those extra pounds of fat and redistribute them. Dr. Kane offers a summer cosmetic surgery promotion during the summer months that you can see on his website: www.DrDeanKane.com.
