Refresh the Face Inside and Outside at the Same Time

Refreshing the Outside of the Face Dr. Dean Kane, Plastic Surgeon, always recommends being on a good therapeutic skin program that incorporates both Vitamin A such as Retinol or Retin A and a Vitamin C serum. Both are anti-oxidants that penetrate the face, stimulate cellular turnover, increases collagen and helps to make the skin more resilient from sun damage. An excellent home skin care system from Dr. Zein Obagi called the ZO Skin Medical Products is exceptional at reversing the aging process of the skin. Dr. Kane has been offering Dr. Obagi’s Medical System for over 18 years due to its fantastic age defying results.

As a compliment to the home care products it is always ideal to have routine chemical peels that will enhance the exfoliation of the outer layer of skin. There are a range of chemical peels from mild levels such as Glycolic and Lactic Acid that offer a light exfoliation to strong TCA Peels that remove layers of dead layers of skin.

At the Center for Cosmetic Surgery and Medi-Spa in Baltimore, Dr. Dean Kane offers these wide range of peels and IPL/Pixel treatments as well as the full line of Dr. Zein Obagi’s ZO Skin Health Program to help reverse the aging process and keeping the skin glowing and smooth.

Revitzaling the Face from the Inside While these medi-spa treatments are needed for the external health of the skin, the use of Dysport/Botox and fillers such as Perlane, Restylane, Radiesse and Juvederm Ultra are used to plump and smooth the wrinkles, folds and hollows from the inside out.

Sculptra, an injectable that is also a fantastic adjunct to the Retin A and Vitamin C skin care program that stimulates your own collagen from inside of the face to naturally re-volumize hollows and folds and jowls. Sculptra is the true liquid facelift that helps you grown young!!

Skin Care and Injectables work Synergistically Together Taking care of your face from the inside and outside makes the most sense when you are trying to get your optimal results. When you combine fillers with skin care you get both the plumping and smoothing from underneath and beautiful glowing clear complexion from the outside. Together they are a match made in heave which is why Dr. Kane is now offering a combination special during the month of November when you buy Botox/Dysport and/or Fillers you get 1 or more FREE Glycolic Acid Peels plus his estheticians will provide a skin analysis with a discussion of your skin health options at the same time. Call today and be refreshed and glowing at your family’s Thanksgiving Dinner.

The Most Up to Date Women’s Breast Cancer Reconstruction Options

October is breast cancer awareness month. Women who unfortunately have been diagnosed with breast cancer will need to face many surgical options to remove the cancer. There are tissue saving procedures where a lumpectomy can be recommended, a tissue saving mastectomy or a full mastectomy removing the entire breast, skin and nipple. After much testing and evaluation, your breast surgeon should guide you as to your most optimal procedure that gives the healthiest and best outcome. There is also a lot of consideration for women to consider when choosing which breast cancer reconstruction options are available to them today.

Full Mastectomy with Breast Implant Reconstruction
A full mastectomy is a procedure that is done to remove either one or both of a woman’s breasts completely;  the breast tissue, skin and nipple are completely removed. In addition to removing a woman’s breasts, a mastectomy may also remove lymph nodes near the armpits to determine if there is anything-abnormal going on. Breast Reconstruction for the full mastectomy patient becomes more of a long term process to replace the lost volume of breast tissue with implants, skin and nipples. At the time of mastectomy surgery, the plastic surgeon places the expander implants in the empty pocket and just mildly fills it with saline fluid to begin the expansion process of the very tight breast skin tissues. After 6 weeks, the woman returns to her plastic surgeon’s office and begins the process of filling the breast expander with saline, until she reaches the size breast that she desires in her future. So a woman who may have been an A or B cup and desires to be a C or D cup can choose any size she would like to now be. But this process of expanding the skin tissues can take many many months. Once the woman reaches the desired size, she is then taken back to surgery to replace the expander implants with the silicone gel or saline implants she will now have for her future breasts. The final process of reconstruction is the creation of the nipples for her breasts. Most plastic surgeons use the skin at the breast mound to recreate a nipple. Once healed, the nipple can be tattooed to the appropriate nipple color to match her ethnic skin color. The entire process can take up to 6 to 12 months.

Tissue Saving Mastectomy with Implant Reconstruction
In the tissue saving mastectomy, the breast tissue of either one or both of the breasts are removed, but the skin and nipple are kept intact.  During this procedure, cancerous cells are removed from the breast and they leave behind a small pocket that an implant can easily be inserted into.  Compared to a traditional mastectomy, a tissue saving mastectomy reduces the amount of scarring on the breast considerably.

At the time the breast tissue is removed, implants are immediately placed in the breast to replace the volume lost by the removal of the breast tissue. Women truly appreciate waking up from surgery and having an immediate breast reconstruction with breast implants saving them the sadness and grief of losing their breasts.

Lumpectomy with Implant or Fat Transfer Reconstruction
A lumpectomy is just as its name, the surgeon is strictly removing the cancer cells out of the breast, but leaving the rest of the breast tissue, skin and nipple intact. Sometimes depending on the size of the breast lump removed, the breast can have a sunken appearance. In this case, there are 2 options to return the breast back to a fuller size. A small implant can be used to replace the volume or if a woman has sufficient body fat, a liposuction fat transfer from one part of the body into the breast can also be achieved. Women love the lipo-fat transfer as they are getting a two for one procedure: reduce the body fat in one area and then re-use it to plump up their breasts to a nice full size. Since it is a woman’s own fat tissue, it is very natural and soft feeling like your own natural breasts.

Dr. Dean Kane in Baltimore, Maryland is well experienced in all three types of breast reconstructions.  In his over 25 years of practice, he has provided women with the most up to date breast reconstruction options to fulfill their desired breast appearance and helping women feel whole again.

Art for Hope Event during Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is often associated with autumn, Halloween and the color pink because it is breast cancer awareness month. Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer and while it is more common in women, it can still be found in a man’s breast tissue.

Breast cancer can be detected by getting an annual mammogram once a woman reaches the age of 40. Early breast cancer detection can be crucial for improving your survival rates and successfully eradicating the cancer. There are a few factors which contribute to how likely you are of getting breast cancer. These factors include gender, race, age, ethnicity and geographic location. While everyone is at risk for breast cancer, the risk increases as you age. Most breast cancers occur in women aged 50 and older. Only 5% of breast cancer occurs in women under the age of 40.

While there currently is no cure for breast cancer, researchers are working tirelessly to find one. Dr. Dean Kane is a plastic surgeon by day and an artist by night. He experiments with photography, painting and mixed media to create beautiful works of art which he sells and donates the proceeds to The Red Devils of Maryland, a breast cancer charity that help support women with breast cancer and their families while receiving treatment for their breast cancer.

To see some of Dr. Kane’s beautiful artwork, they can be viewed and purchased here http://DeanKaneArt.com/.

On Wednesday, October 16th, Drs. Dean and Lauri Kane will host the Grand Opening of DeanKaneART Gallery at the Ritz-Carlton Residences in the Inner Harbor of Baltimore. The gallery opening will serve as a fundraiser for The Red Devils, a Maryland-based, nonprofit whose mission is to fund support services that improve the quality of life for breast cancer patients and their families. A portion of the proceeds from purchases of Dr. Kane’s artwork and all monies from the auctions and raffles will be donated to The Red Devils Horns of Hope Campaign so that they can remain a source of hope to breast cancer families living in Maryland.

What’s the Difference Between a Standard Face Lift and a Macs Procedure?

Various options for face-lifting and skin texture improvements are available according to the skin laxity and areas of lift or tightening you wish or need. If you “pinch an inch” or more of skin in front of the earlobe,  lasers, Botox, fillers, Selphyl, Sculptra and other non-surgical options may help the texture of the skin but will certainly not shrink or lift this amount of skin laxity. With smaller amounts of skin excess you can consider a mini- or a limited (small) scar technique. With more amounts of skin redundancy, you will need to consider longer scars which creep along the sideburn or behind the ear.

The original “standard” facelift performed 30+ years ago made incisions and therefore scars onto the temples and hairline along the neck. It lifted the skin up and back rejuvenating the lateral brow and upper cheek skin but for many gave a “wind-blown” appearance due to the backward pull. Remember though that this is at a time when patients waited until they were older or had more sun damage and skin laxity than patients do today. It also did not necessarily address the deeper tissues such as the cheeks, jowls and neck.

The recent resurgence of the S-Lift (created in the early 1900's), also called by other names today as the  Quick-Lift, Lifestyle-Lift, Swift-Lift, Soft-Lift, MACS-Lift (Minimal Access Cranial Suspension lift) and others; are a single modification of the S-lift targeted to elevate the sagging lower cheeks, jowls and lateral upper neck with a upward lift. The shorter scar, limited undermining and minimized second layer lift achieve the "quicker" procedure but not necessarily the quicker recovery or the improvement you may desire.

Each patient must choose among the different techniques their facial surgeon has skills for. Among the range of procedures I have listed above, I also perform a "short scar" facelift in appropriate patients. This option is unique to the patient's needs as it will address the forehead, upper cheek and neck and by virtue of the wider undermining, will smoothen the nasolabial and marionette folds and up-turn the corner of the mouth which these "quicker" procedures do not. It may also suspend the neck and contour the jowl, lower cheek and neck fat.

There is a lot to consider with facial enhancements from non-invasive to minimally invasive to short and longer scar surgery. You will need to think about your budget and time off to recover as well. I hope this has helped. Thank you for asking. All the best to you! Sincerely, Dean P. Kane, MD, FACS

CoolSculpting vs. Liposuction Removal of Fat for the Arms from your Maryland Cosmetic Surgeon

When it comes to your arms, everyone wants them to be fit and not have the excess thickness detracting from the rest of your perfectly sculpted body. Dieting and exercise only work so well, what if there was a way to get better results in a shorter period of time? Thankfully there is; actually there are two great options for removing excess fat from your arms. You could either try CoolSculpting a non-surgical approach which is a newer but very effective procedure, or you could have it surgically removed with Liposuction. Below is some information about both of the options.

CoolSculpting of Arms
CoolSculpting is a process that is used to freeze away excess fat in targeted areas of your body. It is the non-surgical, painless way of re-shaping your body by freezing away stubborn fat. When combined with proper diet and exercise, CoolSculpting will rapidly freeze away the fat you have been trying to get rid of for years. The ideal CoolSculpting patient is someone who has fat they want to lose in a particular area or areas of the body where diet and exercise alone just will not do the trick. Coolsculpting now has a very special applicator that can effectively freeze the fat from your upper arms. It is ideal to continue your exercise workout on your arms at the same time so that you enhance the effects of your Coolsculpting procedure. After 90 days, you will see your arms thinner and more contoured.

Surgical Removal of Fat of the Arms by Liposuction
Another option for making your arms trimmer is to have the excess fat surgically removed with Liposuction. It is the quickest way to see the results you are looking for and there is little downtime after the procedure. This is ideal for someone who has tried exercising and cannot seem to see the results they are looking for. Arms for woman are a true problem and when Dr. Kane lipo-contours the arms, he specifically targets the entire circumference aspect of the upper arm giving them a “worked out” muscular appearance.  However, the surgery is not effective without a lifestyle change and it is important to work out regularly so that you maintain the surgical contoured affect that Dr. Kane so effectively achieves.

Mommy Makeovers in Baltimore, Maryland

Now that your child has returned to school, you probably have a lot more free time to take care of  yourself. This could mean more frequent shopping trips or gym visits.  However, after having a child, some areas of your body are showing the after effects of pregnancy and breastfeeding . Thankfully, at Dr. Dean Kane’s Center for Cosmetic Surgery & Medi-Spa there is a way to improve those aspects of your body that show loss of volume and laxity in the breasts and excess volume and laxity in the tummy due to aging and pregnancy.  Some of the common procedures that mothers do as part of their ‘mommy makeovers’ are breast augmentation, breast lift,  a tummy tuck and liposuction and Coolsculpting.

Breast Augmentation
A breast augmentation is done with safe, natural silicone gel implants or saline implants, which are both FDA-approved. While saline and silicone breast implants both have an outer silicone shell, they differ in material and consistency. During pregnancy, many women loose some of their breast tissue and a breast augmentation can make the breasts appear fuller returning them back to their original shape and size.

Saline Breast Implants
A saline breast implant is filled with a sterile salt water. The implants are inserted into your breast empty, and then filled once they are in place to allow your breasts to look plump.

Silicone Breast Implants
A silicone breast implant is already filled with a silicone gel at the time of the surgery. Silicone gel mimics the feel of a human breast and some women find that they look and feel more natural than a saline breast implant.
Many women chose to get their breasts enhanced for many reasons from just being very small breasted, loss of breast tissue after pregnancy, to restore their aging and sagging breasts as well as for those women in the entertainment business.  A breast augmentation can be combined with breast lifts for those women who are also experiencing skin laxity and sagging of the breasts, the breasts need both lifting and filling. Women also combine breast augmentations with other cosmetic surgeries such as liposuction or tummy tucks to make sure that you look and feel your best.

Tummy Tuck
Traditionally, the Tummy Tuck or Abdominoplasty is performed when there is excess tummy skin and the internal muscles of the abdomen are stretched and distended (this can happen as the result of multiple childbirths or large size births). The surgery will dramatically narrow your figure forming an “hourglass “waistline. The excess fat and skin is removed while the abdomen is made tight and flat. The recovery from the traditional Tummy Tuck is generally 4 to 6 weeks. Women still need to establish a diet and exercise routine that maintains your new flatter abdomen. Patients are elated with the result of their flat, tight tummy.

Liposuction
Liposuction is another procedure that is used for removing excess fat from the body. It is ideal for when a large amount of fat needs to be removed and it is essentially suctioned out of the body (such as baby weight). Depending on the area of your body where the fat was removed from and how much fat was removed would determine how long the recovery period is. The full results of Liposuction begin to show a visible difference a few weeks after the procedure and continues over time to provide a thinner, more sculpted and contoured appearance.

Coolsculpting
Coolsculpting is also an ideal non-surgical procedure for women who have excess thickness from pregnancy, but can’t take the time out to recovery from a surgical liposuction procedure. Women want to get back into pre-pregnancy figure, but are also trying to care for their newborn children. Coolsculpting freezes unwanted baby fat in targeted areas so that women can feel better about themselves while they combine diet and exercise to get their bodies back to their original form. Coolsculpting would not be available right away for women who have had a C-Section as Coolsculpting can not be performed along a newly formed scar area.
