Dysport versus Botox: Confused? Think of Coke and Pepsi: Dr. Dean Kane of Maryland Explains their differences in reducing wrinkles around the eyes, brows and crows feet.

Many Baltimore patients of Dr. Dean Kane from the Center of Cosmetic Surgery express their confusion by the two muscle relaxers Dysport and Botox. Dr. Kane tries to explain the differences very simply: the two muscle relaxers do very similar effects, but have minor differences. Dysport is made by the company Medicis who also make the well known fillers Restylane and Perlane. Botox is made by Allergan who produce their fillers Juvederm Ultra and Ultra Plus. In essence the two companies are making similar products that do similar rejuvenating effects. Dysport has been shown to last up till 4 months and begins its effects quicker, within 3-4 days. Botox is more well known because it has been on the market much longer. Botox effects last up to 3 months and can take approximately  14 days to achieve its full strength. Both Botox and Dysport are used around the eyes to reduce the wrinkle lines on the forehead, between the eye brows and the crow’s feet. Both can also be used around the mouth to reduce lipstick lines.

For consumers having two companies in essence producing similar products is very similar to Coke versus Pepsi. Just like Coke and Pepsi one week one is on sale and the next the other is offering a promotion. More choices to the consumers mean competition between the two companies and greater promotions.  Right now Medicis is offering a wonderful $50 mail in Rebate up to 3 fillers of Restylane and Perlane or $150 money back. Medicis is also trying to get consumers to try Dysport and created the Dysport Challenge: Love it or Leave it. It’s a win win for the consumer. If you try Dysport, the consumer gets back $75 on their first treatment. The consumer has to go on line 15 days later and indicate whether they love Dysport or hate it. In either case, the consumer gets back another $75 rebate on their next Dysport OR Botox treatment depending on their response. The bottom line: Try it you May like it!! But you need to have the first treatment before April 30th to be eligible for the mail in rebates. To help you decide even more, Dr. Kane has offered his own Dysport and Restylane/Perlane promotions to all his Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Eastern Shore and Washington D.C. patients. So it’s a win win win!
